Telegram bot commands, the rules and a full list

What Telegram bot commands are, the 3 every bot should support, the 32-character rule, how commands work in groups, and 220 real commands to search.

Z By Updated 5 min read

Last checked . Telegram rules checked against Telegram's documentation: Bot Features: commands, Bot Features: global commands, Bot Features: privacy mode, Bot Features: deep linking, Bot API: BotCommand, Bot API: setMyCommands. Bot commands, limits and prices come from the bots' own data, verified .

Commands are how you talk to most Telegram bots. Telegram sets strict rules for them, and they behave differently in groups. Both are covered here, along with how a bot owner sets the list. At the end you can search every command of the 30 bots on this site. The maker of those bots runs this site.

What is a Telegram bot command?

A Telegram bot command is a short keyword that starts with a slash, such as /start or /help, and tells a bot what to do. Telegram highlights commands in messages, so a tap sends them again. When you type / in a chat with a bot, Telegram suggests the commands its owner listed in @BotFather.

Many commands take extra text after a space. For example, /remind tomorrow 9am call the dentist in Nudge sets a reminder for the next morning, and /santa 25 EUR 2026-12-20 in Santa Draw starts a gift exchange with a budget and a date.

Which commands should every Telegram bot support?

Telegram asks every bot to support three global commands: /start, /help and, if the bot has settings, /settings. Telegram apps show shortcuts for them. People see a Start button the first time they open a chat with a bot, and Help and Settings links can appear on the bot’s profile page.

CommandWhat Telegram says it does
/startBegins the interaction with the user, for example with a welcome message. It can also carry a parameter from a link.
/helpReturns a help message: what the bot can do and a list of commands.
/settingsIf the bot has settings, shows them for this user and the commands to change them.

Bots that sell digital goods for Telegram Stars must also respond to /paysupport for payment problems. Most bots on this site use /pro to send the Pro invoice. Compare every Pro upgrade on the Pro page.

Telegram bot command rules for length and characters

A Telegram bot command can have up to 32 characters, according to Telegram’s Bot API. It can contain only lowercase English letters, digits and underscores. Each command also has a description of 1 to 256 characters, which people see in the suggestion list. One list can hold at most 100 commands.

RuleLimitSource
Starts with/Bot Features
Length1 to 32 charactersBot API, BotCommand
Allowed characterslowercase English letters, digits, underscoresBot API, BotCommand
Description1 to 256 charactersBot API, BotCommand
Commands per listat most 100Bot API, setMyCommands

Telegram also suggests making commands specific. /newlocation is clearer than a /new command that then asks “location or rule?”.

How do bot commands work in a Telegram group?

In a Telegram group, add the bot’s username to a command, like /draw@SantaDrawProBot, so it reaches the right bot. By default, bots in groups run in privacy mode. They receive commands meant for them, replies to their messages, and general commands such as /start only if they were the last bot to post.

What this means in practice:

  • Several bots in one group. Type / and pick the command from the list. Telegram adds the right @botname for you.
  • Admin bots see more. Privacy mode doesn’t apply to bots that were added as admins. Admin bots receive all messages. That is why anti-spam bots like Group Gate need admin rights to act.
  • Commands for admins only. A bot can show some commands only to group admins. That is a command scope, set by the bot’s owner.

How to set a bot’s command list in @BotFather

A bot owner sets the command list with the /setcommands command in @BotFather. People then see those commands as suggestions when they type / in a chat with the bot. Developers can set the same list in code with the Bot API method setMyCommands, which also supports scopes and languages.

  1. Open @BotFather and send /setcommands.
  2. Choose your bot from the list BotFather shows.
  3. Send the list of commands with a short description for each, in the format BotFather asks for.
  4. Check it. Open a chat with your bot and type /. The new list appears.

With setMyCommands you can show different lists by scope: the default list, all private chats, all group chats, all group admins, or one specific chat. You can also pass a language code to translate the list. Building your first bot? See how to create a Telegram bot.

A link to a bot can pass a value to /start. When someone opens https://t.me/your_bot?start=hello, the bot receives /start hello. Telegram allows up to 64 characters in that value: letters A-Z and a-z, digits, underscores and hyphens. A ?startgroup= link asks the person to pick a group to add the bot to.

Bot makers use this to know where a visitor came from, or to open a bot on a specific item. The bot links on this site use ?start=site for that reason.

Five bots on this site (Tiny Telegram Tools, Which One Are You, Charades Party, Who Knows Me Best and Crush Check) don’t have a full command reference yet, so they aren’t in the list. Open them from the bot list.

Common problems with bot commands

When a bot in a group ignores a command, check privacy mode first. In privacy mode a bot gets only commands meant for it, so a bare /start may go to another bot. Add the username, like /start@NudgeRemindBot, or pick the command from the / list so Telegram adds the name for you.

  • The / list is empty. The bot’s owner hasn’t set commands in @BotFather. Send /help instead.
  • The bot never sends you a private message. You haven’t pressed Start in a private chat with the bot. Telegram doesn’t let bots start conversations.
  • The bot does nothing in the group. It may need admin rights for that job, such as deleting messages. Check the bot’s page for the rights it needs.
  • A command with text fails. Check the format in the example. For instance, /santa needs an amount, a 3-letter currency code and a date as YYYY-MM-DD.

Key terms

Bot command
A message that starts with / and tells a bot what to do, for example /start. Telegram highlights commands so you can tap them.
Global commands
The commands Telegram asks every bot to support: /start, /help and, if the bot has settings, /settings.
@BotFather
Telegram's bot for creating and managing bots. Its /setcommands command sets the list people see when they type /.
Command scope
Who sees a command list: everyone, all private chats, all groups, all group admins, or one chat. Set with the Bot API method setMyCommands.
Privacy mode
The default for bots in groups. The bot sees only commands and messages meant for it, unless it's an admin or the owner turns the mode off.

Questions people ask

How do I see all commands of a Telegram bot? +

Open a chat with the bot and type /. Telegram shows the commands the bot's owner listed, with a short description. Many bots also open a menu button with the same list. Send /help for the bot's own explanation.

Why does a bot ignore my command in a group? +

The command may have gone to another bot. Add the bot's username, like /draw@SantaDrawProBot. Telegram's privacy mode lets a bot see commands meant for it, and /start only if it was the last bot to post in the group.

How long can a Telegram bot command be? +

Up to 32 characters. The Bot API allows lowercase English letters, digits and underscores in the command. The description that people see next to it can be 1 to 256 characters.

How many commands can a Telegram bot have? +
